Obituary For Annie Doris Adams

Annie Doris Williams Adams “Dot”
May 26, 1935 - November 27, 2020

Mrs. Annie Doris Williams Adams was born in Cuthbert, Georgia on May 26, 1935 and transitioned from this life at her home in Birmingham, Alabama on November 27, 2020.

With her 6 sisters and 2 brothers, her parents Cobie and Pearlie Williams moved the family from Georgia to Rosedale (Homewood), Alabama when she was a child in the late 1930’s. As a graduate of famed Rosedale High School, she completed her undergraduate studies at the University of Cincinnati and received graduate degrees and certifications in education from historic Miles College in Fairfield, Alabama.

As an admired elementary school educator, she helped integrate the Jefferson County School System as one of the first African American teachers in the system until her retirement in 1992. She taught 5th grade reading and language arts at Crumly Chapel Elementary School for 33 years.

A 1984 inductee into the Alabama Jazz Hall of Fame as a vocalist, she was a sought after artist who served as a regular performer at the famous Woodland Club with the love of her life and late husband, Dr. Frank E. Adams, Sr. Her music career allowed her the opportunity to travel across the United States while recording iconic Jazz classics of the era.

Her Christian faith was central to who she was as an active member of the Metropolitan A.M.E. Zion church where she was an engaged volunteer and mentor for the church’s youth and young adults.

Her passions included enjoying her large family, gardening, cooking, playing with her beloved Shih Tzu, Sam, and volunteering in her historic neighborhood of Bush Hills and with other community organizations across the Birmingham Metropolitan area. She devoted much of her time and energy as a caregiver to family members, including her late mother-in-law, Ella Adams.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, Dr. Frank E. Adams, Sr.; parents, Cobie and Pearlie Williams; her sisters Alma Williams, Grace Sarter, Annette Reed and Martha McDonald; her brothers Edward Williams and James Williams.

Mrs. Adams is survived by her son Frank E. Adams, Jr., daughter-in-law Patrice and her only grandson, Frank William “Will” Adams; sisters, Carol Bethel and Patricia Williams and a host of nieces and nephews living across the United States and abroad.

A public viewing will be held on Friday, December 4, 2020 from 1:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m. at Arrington Funeral Home, 520 Cotton Avenue, SW, Birmingham Alabama 35211.
